Sibiu

Sibiu is one of the most beautiful cities in Romania and the former capital of the historical region of Transylvania.

In 2007, the city received the title of European Capital of Culture, being the first city in Eastern Europe to receive this title.

By the end of the 17th century, Transylvania became the largest principality of the Habsburg Empire, and Sibiu was the capital of this region between 1692 – 1791 and 1850-1867.

The town impresses visitors worldwide with its historical center, representing the most extensive medieval urban ensemble in Romania with numerous buildings dating from the Middle Ages.

Sibiu hosts the oldest museum in Romania and Eastern Europe. This is the Brukenthal museum that has been operating since 1817 in the former palace built by Baron Samuel von Brukenthal and donated to the municipality.

It is often recognized as a city of superlatives in this part of Europe because here appeared the first public library, the first hospital, the first school, the first pharmacy, the first bookstore, the first calendar, the first bank with Romanian capital, the first cast-iron bridge, the first hydropower plant, first zoo or first theater building.

Forbes magazine ranks Sibiu 8th in the list of “most idyllic places to visit”, and in 2014 The Huffington Post included this city in the list of “The most charming cities in Europe you have to visit”. Michelin awarded Sibiu 3 stars (Green Guide Stars).

You can book a tour to visit Sibiu from Bucharest (around 280 km), from Brasov (around 140 km) or from Cluj-Napoca (around 170 km).
