Itinerary

Day 1Bucharest – Sinaia – Brasov – Sighisoara

Maramures, Bucovina & Danube Delta Tour will start in the morning around 08:00 am at your hotel. We will depart from Bucharest to Sinaia, also known as “The Pearl of the Carpathians”. It is a beautiful mountain resort in the Carpathian mountains at 800 meters altitude. Here you will visit Sinaia Monastery and Peles Castle built by the first King of Romania, Carol I, to be a summer Royal residence. The castle is an architectural beauty and very modern (for that time), being the first castle in Europe with electric power.

From Sinaia, we head to Brasov, an old medieval citadel, the most important commercial center from all the seven German Medieval Cities (Siebenburgen). Visit the Old Town (the Historical Centre), followed by lunch.

In the afternoon, we go to Sighisoara, the only medieval citadel in Europe still populated (UNESCO heritage), kept in the original form with the old medieval fortifications and the old towers. Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse in Sighisoara.

Day 2Sighisoara – Barsana – Sapanta – Sighetu Marmatiei

After breakfast, we will drive you toward the region of Maramures. In this place, the purity of nature blends with the beauty of the old villages. The locals kept their traditions untouched, where the carved wood represents a common way of building.

You will visit the wooden church Barsana built in 1995 and the most representative wooden church in Maramures, and also “The Old Barsana” (UNESCO heritage), which was translated from the original place to another location using the old popular technique called “Dovetail”.

Then, we will go to nearby Sapanta village where you will admire the famous Merry Cemetery. The Merry Cemetery has gained originality and value through the chopped, carved, and painted crosses. The artisan has chiseled out-versified epitaphs, most of them full of a remarkable sense of humor, particularly to the area and all the Romanians. The value of these works of art is recognized both at home and abroad. You will be visiting the highest wooden church in the same village in the world called Sapanta Peri (78 meters).

Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse in Sighetul Marmatiei. Depending on the time, we may visit the most notorious communist prison in Romania located in the same city.

Day 3Sighetu Marmatiei – Ciocanesti – Moldovita – Sucevita – Voronet – Gura Humorului

In the morning, you will leave behind Maramures entering Bucovina. This region of Romania is known for its painted monasteries, the traditional houses adorned with beautiful floral and geometrical motifs, its traditions kept over the centuries, and for its kind and hospitable people.

On our way, we will drive through Prislop Pass, admiring the picturesque scenery, our first stop being Ciocanesti village. All the houses here are painted with traditional motifs, and the village hosts “The Painted Eggs Museum”.

Our journey continues to the north to visit the painted monasteries, unique for the originals frescoes both on the inside & outside walls, still preserved in the original style (some of these monasteries being UNESCO heritage).

We will see Moldovita Monastery founded in 1532, initially built as a monastery for monks, later becoming a convent for nuns.

The second monastery will be Sucevita, which is the largest of all, looking more like a mighty fortress than a monastery. As the last one to be painted on the exterior walls, this monastic place boasts the entire region’s best-preserved frescoes.

In the end, you will visit the most famous painted monastery of all:  Voronet Convent, also known as “The Sistine Chapel of the Orient”. Erected in 1488, Voronet Monastery represented one of the first Moldavian creative elements showing a distinctive style. The church is a combination of Byzantine, Gothic and local elements. The exterior painting on the western wall depicts the Doomsday scene, on five registers, unique in the entire world. Voronet Monastery entered the universal cultural heritage for the inimitable “Voronet blue” color found on its paintings.

Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse in Gura Humorului.

Day 4Gura Humorului – Tulcea

Today, we will head to the Danube Delta. The journey will be long but beautiful, going through many towns and villages of Moldavia, allowing you to see the Romanian life in the countryside.

We will stop to have lunch in an excellent local restaurant.

We will arrive at our last destination, Tulcea, the Danube Delta’s Gate, in the evening. This city is one of the oldest settlements on the Romanian territory, starting with the Greek colony during the 8th century B.C.

We will have dinner and overnight at a hotel or guesthouse in Tulcea to start our Danube Delta journey early the next day.

Day 5Tulcea – Bucharest

The day will begin with a boat tour on the Danube Delta’s channels.

The Danube Delta (UNESCO heritage) is the largest and the best-preserved river delta in Europe, with a total surface of 3446 square kilometers.

We will admire delta flora with specific swamp and fauna vegetation with 133 species of fish and 327 species of birds, some of them migratory and some other local birds.

On the way back from the trip, we will enjoy a fish lunch in a restaurant in the area.

At the end of the day, we will return to Bucharest.
